Fabric Types You’ll Fall in Love With: Options for Every Style

Why Fabric Choice Matters

The fabric used to make dresses, trousers, shirts and skirts affects both comfort and fashion trends. Fabric determines how a garment looks, feels and lasts. The right fabric makes a piece attractive and suited to the conditions it will be worn in. Trends also play a role. Each season brings new directions, and designers choose fabrics accordingly. In recent years, natural fabrics such as cotton, linen and muslin have become popular because they are breathable, comfortable and more environmentally friendly. Synthetic fabrics are often used in sportswear for qualities such as water resistance. Fabric choice also depends on a garment’s function. Workwear calls for durable, wrinkle-resistant, comfortable fabrics, while evening wear favors more luxurious, shiny and light fabrics. It also changes with the season: cotton and linen are preferred in summer, while wool and warmer fabrics suit winter. In this post, we look at five natural fabric types widely used in fashion to help you choose well.

Muslin, Cotton, Poplin, Buldan Cloth and Modal: Their Place in Fashion

Muslin fabric

Muslin Fabric

Muslin is a light, soft, breathable fabric made from cotton yarn and has been used for many purposes throughout history. Especially popular in summer, it lets air flow and keeps the body cool. It’s also well known for baby products thanks to its soft texture. Muslin is historically associated with the region around Dhaka in Bengal and later spread to Europe. Originally it was hand-woven from cotton yarn; today it is usually machine-woven. Its plain, open weave makes it light and flexible, and it is durable enough to withstand frequent washing. Muslin is used for summer dresses, shirts, skirts and baby products, and as a natural fabric it takes dye easily in many colors. With its softness, lightness and pure feel, muslin has become one of our favorite fabrics. We make it in Denizli from 100% cotton yarn, and because it’s woven as a double-layer open weave, even light colors aren’t see-through. Explore HE-QA muslin designs among our tunics and shirts.

Cotton Fabric

Cotton is a natural fabric grown in many parts of the world, and it’s popular as a more sustainable option. Most people choose it because it’s gentle on the skin. Soft and flexible, cotton is increasingly popular as people look for comfort in their clothes, and it dyes easily, letting designers play with colors and prints. There are many types of cotton fabric: cotton sateen with a fine, smooth, silky texture; thick, sturdy cotton canvas; and light poplin. Each suits different designs. Our 100% cotton waxed canvas bags are one example, and we often use canvas in our trench coats too. Cotton is breathable, helping prevent sweating and moisture buildup, which makes it ideal for hot weather. Denim, which we wear in all four seasons in jeans, trench coats and skirts, is also woven from cotton. Cotton is durable and long-lasting, holding its color and shape well through frequent washing. Its softness, flexibility, breathability and durability keep it a favorite of designers and shoppers alike. Poplin fabric

Poplin Fabric

Poplin is a tightly woven fabric made with cotton yarn. It stands out for its fine, light structure and durability, and it’s a popular summer choice. Poplin is often used in shirts and light jackets. Its soft texture is comfortable to wear, and while cotton poplin creases quickly, the creases also relax quickly, making it easy to wear. Its smooth surface makes printed colors look vivid and clear, and it comes in a wide range of colors for many styles and uses.

Buldan Cloth

Made with handcraft techniques and natural dyes, Buldan cloth is one of Turkey’s original fabrics. A traditional Turkish craft, its production is labor-intensive and often carried out by women. Buldan cloth is durable, soft and breathable, making it a summer favorite. Its natural structure also fits well with sustainable fashion trends. It’s used for dresses, skirts, shirts and home textiles such as curtains, and because it’s handmade, every piece has a unique character. If you’re looking for a sustainable option, Buldan cloth is worth discovering.

Modal Fabric

Modal is a semi-synthetic fabric made from the cellulose of trees such as beech. It is one of the most comfortable fabrics you can wear in summer: it feels pleasant on the skin, breathes well and transfers moisture effectively, reducing discomfort when you sweat. It also keeps its sheen and color through many washes. Used in dresses, shirts, trousers and many other garments, modal has become very popular in recent years. Its most notable feature is softness: with a cotton-like texture and silky sheen, it looks elegant and luxurious. It’s easy to care for, machine-washable and easy to iron. Thanks to its soft texture and breathability, modal is used in dresses, blouses and even trench coats, and its relatively eco-friendly production has added to its popularity. Its fibers are strong, making it durable, and its high absorbency helps you stay comfortable on hot days.
